Let's Read Reviews

Let's Read has carried out two major reviews of their work, in 2014 and again in 2017.  This document combines the two.

2017 An independent view of Let's Rea
d

In 2016 MA student Rona Bronwin spent three weeks in Sirigu, using Let's Read as a vehicle for her study
"Expanding teachers’ capability: pedagogy, language and gender in Northern Ghana."

Rona visited several schools, interviewed teachers individually, ran group discussions and organised questionnaires.  Her findings on the impact of Let's Read were overwhelmingly positive.

"Teachers praised the programme for being: accessible, simple, practical, personal and offering something different that brought about positive change amongst pupils and teachers."

One teacher stated, ‘my experience with Let’s Read, actually, it’s a brilliant thing. They have really come to change so many things, here to me’. All LRG teachers interviewed spoke positively and passionately about their interactions. As discussed above, they demonstrated a certain confidence relating to their teaching practice, which was not as present in non-LRG teachers."

Rona also collected further findings relevant to Let's Read rather than to her research focus and these can be read in her research report below.

What do teachers think?

Teachers do not engage readily with new programmes unless they are convinced that they work both for them and for their children.

We receive many positive comments at every visit.  A few are recorded below:

  • LR adds value to my teaching
  • I use LR across all the subjects
  • The pictures in the books are very useful and help children to attempt reading the text
  • LR helps my children to learn in groups
  • I no longer drill my children to read. They use blending to attack words they do not know
  • The impact of LR on teaching is capacity building
  • Those children who have been doing LR can tackle reading new and difficult words
  • We are getting better readers.
